The Monticello Utah Victims of Mill Tailings Exposure Committee
or VMTE Committee would like to welcome you to our domain. There is information on this site regarding the contamination of our area due to a uranium mill that produced and provided material for nuclear weapons for the United States government during World War II and the cold war era. The mill was in operation from 1941-1960 then left abandoned, therefore contamination years were from 1941-2000. An extensive clean up was done at the mill site and on 425 vicinity properties.
Our beautiful town is now the safe, clean little community we all enjoy.
Millions of dollars were spent by the U.S. government cleaning the mill site they had left contaminated and abandoned and the adjoining town properties. However the health issues that we feel are a direct result of years of toxic contamination have never been addressed or recognized by our government. Please take the time to look at the site and return often for updates. It is our goal to seek adequate health care for those victims that have suffered from cancer because of the Monticello Mill Site.

Hi,
My name is Mike Goldfein. Back in the early 1980s I was a reporter at KUTV, Salt Lake City. In 1983 I spent some months investigating and preparing a story about the radioactive tailings and the leukemia cases in Monticello. I recently retired from journalism (I live in the Washington, DC area) and while going through old videos, I found the story. I have posted it online here:
http://vimeo.com/25082090
Feel free to watch it and let others know it is there. It may not be the earliest news report about the devastating health problems suffered by the good people of Monticello as a result of government indifference, but I'm certain it is the earliest broadcast news story. In preparing the story, we gathered a lot of interviews and had some interesting encounters with the folks from the Department of Energy.
Please feel free to drop me a line. I'd like to hear how things have worked out. I know the battle continues.
Best Regards,
Mike
